FAQ’s Feed Bin Silo and Oilfield Example Projects

Does increasing the film thickness increase insulation value?
Ceramic Insulation Coatings are always applied at a (DFT) thickness between 11 to 17 mils. The principle of solar radiation control is related to solar reflectivity and thermal emissivity. Increasing the number of applications will not enhance the performance of Ceramic Insulation Coatings.

What is the K-Value or R-Value of insulation?
The R-Value is the measure of resistance of material to heat flow/ gain by conduction only. The K-Value is the measure of thermal conductivity, the rate of heat transfer by conduction through a material.

What is the R-Value of ceramic insulation?
There is no common ground between radiation energy transfer and conduction transfers because they are separate heat transfer modes. As a result, comparing R-Value of ceramic insulation coatings with the R-Value of conventional mass insulation is not possible.

Dry Film Thickness (DFT):
Thickness of a coating when dry is expressed in MILS or MICRONS (Industrial Maintenance Coatings Handbook). Example: (DTF) = wet film thickness x percent solids by volume. (100% by volume at 1 MIL thickness is equal to 1604 sq. ft.)

What are the types of heat transfers?
Radiation, Conduction, and Convection.

What specific function does Ceramic Insulation Coatings play in application on hot surfaces?
Ceramic Insulation Coatings reduces significantly the surface temperatures controlling radiant heat by up to 95%. Personnel safety protection requirements against accidental burn injury are included.

What is the Theoretical Coverage?
The spreading rate of a coating without considering wastage or loss. The average waste factor is calculated at a rate of 10% to 15%.

What is Solids by Volume?
The volume of the nonvolatile portion of a coating composition divided by the total volume.

Ceramic Insulation Coatings can out-perform four inches of polyurethane foam insulation.

Oilfield Pipeline Line HeaterComparing the temperature of a metal surface
Ceramic Insulation Coating = 400 F
Polyurethane foam insulation = 900 F
Ceramic Coatings applied to 80 MILS on this Oilfield Pipeline Line Heater is a typical example. As a bonus the coating provides corrosion protection for the internal glycol.(Progress Field, Dawson Creek, BC North)
